Our Mission & History
For 60 years, Trout Unlimited has engaged millions of people in an ambitious mission to conserve, protect and restore coldwater fisheries.
For 40 years, the NYC Chapter of Trout Unlimited is unique among all TU chapters as we enjoy equal access to the storied streams of New York's Catskills, the spring creeks of Pennsylvania, the tailwaters of Connecticut, and even the bass and carp fishing in Central Park. As stream agnostics, we are able to give our hands-on support to all neighboring Chapters for stream rehabilitation, planting, cleanup and education.
NYC TU is also fortunate to call one of the most diverse cities in the country our home. We strive to maintain a diverse chapter that is inclusive and provides opportunity for engagement with the chapter to all communities.
We also recognize the way in which people engage with a watershed varies and while our core interest may have started in fly fishing, our mission transcends that and we welcome anyone who shares the belief that we should protect cold-water fisheries for future generations.
To that end, a personal project for our chapter is the continued support of Trout in the Classroom, which puts aquariums and trout eggs into city schools and helps the kids hatch, raise, learn about and eventually release the fish in local streams.
Any chapter is only as strong as its members. If you would like to get more involved, have energy and skills you would like to contribute, or have an idea for an activity or project, and the willingness to help make it happen, we’d love to hear from you. We are always looking for volunteers, committee leads, and the next crop of board members and officers.
